Good Morning Ruth!
Thank you for following up with the Sam Looney information. I definitely need to get that article so will do what I can by contacting Missouri Life. A few others have posted with an idea or two about him,... and I am so appreciative of the help everyone offers.
My thoughts are still at the formative stage right now and I am researching what I can. Mr. Landers and another lady in Pineville posted. Mr. Landers thinks he may have a photo somewhere that I could see...which will help. I have some notes my dad gave me quite some time ago about him as well. He had a motorized bicycle and I am fortunate to also know the process he used to make his arrows. My dad also told me how he walked with a very long stride.
While I gather information on him I have the book about my grandfather's friends I am trying to put together and some art projects going about southwest MO, art lessons I give, etc.,...so if I don't post to you immediately, please don't ever think I am not appreciative that you have volunteered your information to me so generously. You are very kind.
Enjoy this pretty weekend!

The July-August 1978 issue of Missouri Life has an extensive article about Sam "Fits" Looney, entitled "Sam Was a Ramblin' Man". It was written by Emery Styron with illustrations by Lowell Davis.
The main illustration shaws him walking along a road identified as "South 71". He is carrying several arrows in one hand, with bows over his shoulder.
The second illlustration shows him sitting in a field whittling either an arrow or bow, with a squirrel sitting along side him. He is eyeballing the carving, I guess to see if it is straight.
A third illustration shows him sitting on a stool in a restaurant feeding a squirrel with an eyedropper. It is a very interesting article, 5 pages in length (2 are full page illustrations) and goes into much detail about the man, his life, and eccentric ways.
The last sentence gives his sentiments: "Most people think I'm crazy," he once told a friend, "but my pet squirrels know more than they do."
