That is a tough question. I suspect if you asked the people who
worked in the mines, or the local politicians, they would
all say it was great for the area. Gave them jobs. If you asked
people today you would get mixed answers.
It's nice that you can go to these areas today and they are
generally fairly nice despite the tailings issues. Mining
definitely affects the land, especially where you have whole
mountain removal, but it doesn't generally have the long
term environmental problems that ore processing seems
to create. Maybe - maybe not.
