Hi Julie,
A sexton was an officer of the church who attended the clergyman, looked after
the fabric of the church, kept the churchyard tidy, dug graves, rang the bell
etc., in other words a sort of caretaker, or if you're in North America a
janitor.
When the church bell tolled the knell of parting day it was the sexton wot did
it! :-)
