Date: Sat, 7 Jun 2003 13:52:41 +0100

Saron in Ebbw Vale and Saron Row were knocked down years ago. Tredegar
is shown as Sharon or Saron on I.G.I's mainly, but it is *Saron* Welsh
Congregational. It was built by Tredegar Ironworks for the Welsh
speaking population. Minister is Rev Viv Nichols (female) is the current
minister. Contact:- Rev V Nicholls (Mrs)7, Maes y crew, Llanhilleth,
Gwent. Telephone 01495 214784.

The graveyard in Saron was grassed over in the mid 1990's. Gwent FHS
have transcribed the MI's for the graveyard in 1991. It is on MI 109,
available from the Sales Officer, Ann Macey, 50, Queens Hill, Newport,
NP20 5HJ. The fiche also contains the following:-

Tredegar Ebenezer Independent Chapel Sirhowy,
Tredegar Carmel Chapel Sirhowy
Tredegar Cefn Golau Cholera Cemetary
Tredegar Penuel Chapel, Harcourt Terrace
Tredegar Saron Independent Chapel
Tredegar Harcourt Terrace Methodist
Tafarnaubach, Siloam

Saron in Briery Hill, Ebbw Vale was a Congregational (Welsh) also.
Also on Fiche 110, that Ann Macey mentioned is:-

Beaufort Ebenezer Chapel
Beaufort Bethesda Presbyterian (C.M.)
Ebbw Vale Old Penuel
Ebbw Vale Saron (Briery Hill) and Tabernacle
Manmoel Paran Chapel
Ebbw Vale Church in Wales (Old)
Beaufort, St Davids

There is a multi-functional Chapel, Caersalem (Baptist) opposite the
Park Hotel in Waunllwuyd, Ebbw Vale. This chapel has Methodist,
Congregational(Independent) and Baptist meetings. The Minister is Rev
Mary Davies, 70, Holland Street, Ebbw Vale. Tel 01495 309964. She may
give you details of the current Ministers. Mary has a reputation for not
being particularly co-operative, so best of luck;-<

I am in the process of compiling a directory for Blaenau Gwent libraries
for current Places of Worship in Ebbw Vale and Tredegar. Hopefully the
same can be compiled for the other areas of Blaenau Gwent, Blaina,
Nantyglo, Abertillery, etc.

Pam Griffiths, on this list, has an excellent knowledge of places of
Worship of course. I will be in possession of more information after our
Research Evening this coming Thursday of the current 'Plan'.

Last year I called into Ebbw Vale Library to find a telephone or address
contact for a Chapel which I knew was in existence. The information was
completely out of date (1989) and the chapel secretary had died 7 years
ago!! I decided to update their list and it is a 'can of worms.'!!

Robert Smith is the Beaufort and Ebbw Vale Town correspondent for the
local " Gwent Gazette. " He is always interested in news for his column.
You can contact him on :-

hope this may help someone.

best regards
