Dear List Members
Shw Mae
I am a recent subscriber to your list. I live in Australia. My family
history research has led me to suspect that one of my ancestors was born
in Abergavenny.
If any members could furnish me with any further information about my
ancestors, this would be most helpful.
The names I am researching are BURNS and Mc CARTY.
Tracking back through my family I find my Great Grandfather Felix BURNS
was married in Liverpool, England, in 1855, aged 19 years. His father
was also called Felix BURNS and is listed as a Dealer.
The 1851 Census Index of Liverpool - Scotland Ward shows the following:
Enumeration District 2 (481A) Felix BURNS,( born in Abergavenny, Wales),
(unfortunately no date of birth is given). At the same address are
listed Ellen BURNS, Milk Dealer, and Barnard (could this be Bernard?)
BURNS, Blacksmith, (both born in Ireland).
A Record in The IGI (Mormon web site) shows:
A Felix BURNS christened 13 November 1836, Abergavenny Rc, Abergavenny,
Monmouth.
Parents – Felicis BURNS and Helenae MC CARTY (I am aware that some
clerics were in the habit of listing Christian names in Latin).
Although I have no evidence that the above Felix BURNS is my Great
Grandfather, the dates fit and I am interested to pursue these people.
I understand that there is a Monmouthshire Marriage Index from
1813-1837. If anyone could check this for me, this would be helpful.
Any other information would also be appreciated.
I truly hope one day to be able to visit beautiful Wales and to continue
the research into my family.
Diolch yn Fawr
Warm wishes
Phyllis Mockunas
