Subject: Diary of John WARNES of Beaufort, 1855

Dear List,

Can anyone point me in the direction of either Roger Burchell or Eric Smith (a minister) who I am told might be able to supply me with a transcription of the diary of John WARNES, iron miner and later tea dealer of Beaufort who also preached for the Primitive Methodist faith? The diary only covers a short period of 9 months in 1855 when he was travelling the local circuit and I am told that it forms the basis of an article in one of Keith Thomas' most recent books. I would also like to know whether the original diary from which the transcription was made is still extant. John Warnes lived in Beaufort and was attached to the Ebenezer Primitive Methodist Chapel where he and most of his family are buried. Unfortunately, the graveyard has recently been damaged beyond repair and most of the Warnes family tombstones can no longer be found although thankfully they are recorded in the MI transcriptions.

Thanks and best wishes to all

James Phillips-Evans
