I must agree with Hugh that Ancestry.com does make a positive and valuable
free contribution to family history through its support of Rootsweb, FreeBMD
etc.
I have contacted Ancestry on a number of occasions about their lookups
policy in relation to their resources. The replies generally welcome lookups
being posted ON list and in public forums such as British Genealogy,
Rootschat, etc., as long as the source of the lookup is acknowledged.
I also agree with Hugh that the best way to discuss ANY list message is on
the list. Off list messages remove all other list members (including the
list admin) from further discussion of the opening thread message, and make
a mockery of the reason for mailing lists.
To be pedantic, the PRO / National Archive, and not Ancestry, own the census
images that Ancestry members can access through a subscription to
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/
Under the terms of both Ancestry's licence from the PRO to show the images,
and the individual subscriber's membership of Ancestry, saving a copy of a
census image and passing it on to another person is not allowed - Ancestry
(and its members) only have the right to see a census image on the Ancestry
site, members are allowed to save one copy of an image on one computer for
private use.
Ancestry have provided a way for "image lookups" to be available without
breaching any agreements - subscribers can click the "Share" icon which
sends an URL to a "family member or friend" that allows them to view the
image "on site" without payment for a limited period (your "friend" is able
to save the image to his/her own computer). Your "friend" can be a Rootsweb
list or a board!
As an example, try this URL within the next 5 days:
367-0548>
All the best
Alwyn

ancestry.co.uk have a much more postive view of look ups
they pay for lists and message boards
by supporting http://www.rootsweb.com/
sending images off list is a bad idea because it does not
contribute to the cross fertilisation of ideas.
