did the railway go through? and Does anyone know where it was?
==================

Dear Maggie,

On the maps you were studying, the railway is clearly shown a few yards to
the west of the road which runs northwards in front of Henwaun Row. On the
map, Blaina railway station is located between the Blaina gasworks and St
Peter's Church. From the station a short branch-line runs to the Blaina Iron
Works.

The 1881 census enumerates Roberts Row between Henwain [sic] Row, and
Railway Tavern and Tilers Row. As you've pointed out, Henwaun Row is
identified on the map. Tiler's Row is not shown, but Tilers Arms public
house is south of Henwaun Row and the Henwaun Colliery. I would guess that
Roberts Row was in the area between Henwaun Row and the Tilers Arms.
Although the maps were published in 1885/86, the main surveys for the maps
would have predated their publication by several years, possibly a decade or
more, evidently before Roberts Row and Tilers Row were built.

In addition to the named rows you have mentioned, there are a number of
others nearer the centre of the village, mainly in the area round the
ironworks: Shrubbery Row; Inkerman Row; Yellow Row; Feeder Row; Alma Row;
Shinton's Row; Parson Row*; Shop Row*; Ebbw Row; Globe Row. There may be
others. The rows marked * are still shown on a modern street plan of Blaina,
as are Club Row and River Row.

Kind regards,

John
