Greetings all - my mother was born in Gilfach Bargoed and I was curious as
to the name Gilfach as there appear to be quite a few place names which
include Gilfach. Can someone please shed any light as to the meaning?
================
Dear Alan,
Gilfach is a combination of two Welsh words: 'gil' and 'fach'.
Gil is a mutation of 'cil' = corner, recess, nook
Fach is a mutation of 'bach' = small, lesser
So 'Gilfach' = small recess/nook
Elwyn Davies (1967) lists five place-names commencing with the word
'gilfach':
Gilfach Bargoed (Gilfach Fargod)
Gilfach-goch
Gilfachreda
Gilfach-wen
Gilfachyrheol
