Hi,
They were transported for more than the clichés of stealing a loaf of bread
and poaching. People were sentenced to be hung for lesser crimes than
murder.,but these were frequently commuted to 'transportation' for specific
periods e.g 14 or 15 years or life and at usually 2/3 of the sentence, if
their behaviour was good, they got a Conditional Pardon and conditional on
never returning to the UK under pain of death. The foregoing is very much a
simplification. It is a rather complex subject with many, many changes in
policy.
