I found this, which was a little confusing at first.

http://www.richard.clark32.btinternet.co.uk/walton.html

It's a link to Walton Prison (formerly Kirkdale), Liverpool that says a
Matthew William Chadwick was the first person to die using the new
"step-free" gallows at Kirkdale. The date of execution is exactly the same
as you state in your email.

This would appear to be the same William Chadwick who murdered Walter
Davies, based on the following link:

http://www.murderresearch.com/murderindex/default.htm

The index lists:
CHADWICK, WILLIAM,,1890-15-APR, MURDER OF WALTER DAVIES,LIVERPOOL

Here's a link to the story of the crime:

http://www.real-crime.co.uk/Murder1/docc.htm#Chadwick,%20William%20Matthew

This certainly seems to be the "right" William Chadwick, but I don't know
how he got connected to Newgate. Note that they do give this man's age (23)
in 1889-90. And he lived in Liverpool. Does Jane have any connections to
Liverpool? If not, then it doesn't seem likely that she and the murderer are
connected.

Subject: [Mon] Executions at Newgate Prison!

Hi List,

I have a Jane Powell dangling from one of my tree branches, born about 1862
in Ebbw Vale. Parents: Henry Powell & Ann Lewis. Henry is the brother of
my direct ancestor, Thomas Elijah Powell. Jane Powell married a William
Chadwick in Newport Mon, March qtr. 1886. Jane Chadwick appears in 1891
with three children living with her parents in Newport.

I did a search for William Chadwick on the LDS site and got some interesting
information. There was a William Chadwick executed April 15, 1890 at
Newgate Prison for the murder of one Walter Davies.

Of course, I don't know whether this fellow was the husband of Jane Chadwick
nee Powell, but the dates fit. Jane & William were married 1886. Their
children were born 1887, 1889 and late 1890 or early 1891 (baby only few
months old on census). I haven't had any luck finding Janet & William
Chadwick in any of the later census.

My question - how can I find out if this William Chadwick who was executed
at Newgate Prison in 1890 was the husband of Jane Powell?

Thanks.
