Thank you! If John Barry died there, would there be a local record? How
would I go about checking those 3 listing you gave for Ireland? Also how would I
check on if "Morris" is my Maurice? I do know his sister Catherine names one
son Morris Parnell. If Morris was married there and his wife died there where
would I look for such records. What about the sister Mary marrying? Is there
an office to write to for such things?

Dear Renee

You may find it worth asking the Monmouthshire list too.

In both 1851 and 1861 censuses, John Barry was listed in the parish of
Trevethin (not Treverhin). In 1851 he was in Sowhill which was in the
town of Pontypool and had a fair-sized Irish community. My grandmother
Mary HARRIS was born in Sowhill in 1865 and is listed there with her
Cork-born parents in 1871.

The birthplace in County Cork may be the civil parish of Lislee,
Clonakilty Poor Law Union, in the southwestern part of County Cork. The
Roman Catholic parish is also known as Barryroe. Although this is a
reasonable guess for the birthplace, it might instead be Lisleagh.
There are two townlands of that name in the eastern part of Co Cork.
The census entry looks more like Lisleagh but the spelling of Irish
placenames wasn't standardized at that time and I think the parish now
spelled Lislee is most likely.

Catherine was born in Caerleon near Newport, Mon.

Maurice Barry was probably still in Monmouthshire in 1871. There's a 25
year-old Irish-born widower named "Morris" Barry lodging with a John
Lynch in Abersychan. That's only a few miles north of Pontypool and
also in the parish of Trevethin.

I'll see if I can find your "missing" 1870 Pennsylvania census but
haven't done so yet.

Best wishes,

Sean
