My Jewish ancestors came from London and prior to that some of them came
from Amsterdam on a herring boat. I believe that some of them migrated to
South wales and that is why my great grand mother chose to open her fancy
goods bazaar in Newport. I just haven't found the right relatives yet.

Never reject anything until you have proved it is wrong. My parents were
spiritualists so I don't see anything strange in that but I understand what
you mean.

Your Jewishness comes down through the maternal line - the only thing you
can be sure of is who your mother is (I joke so please don't pick up on
this) so if the wife was Jewish it doesn't matter what faith the children
were brought up in they are regarded as Jewish.

I've looked into possible lines but I don't really know what to look for.

You just have to go back one generation at a time and when you can't find
the parish registers for a marriage look in the synagogue records. I joined
the jewish genealogical Society of Great Britain when I was pretty sure I
had found my Jewish link and then asked questions on their mailing list and
forum. They have been so helpful and informative it has been a wonderful
experience.

You will also find a lot of the members of this list will be very helpful
too - now that you realise that clicking reply sends the message to the list
and not to the sender of the message you are replying to.
