Very many Old Testament names were in use in 19th and late 18th century, not
only in non-conformist circles. Moses, Daniel, Jethro, Job, Jacob, Israel,
Solomon, Jabez, Absalom, Abraham, Levi, Samuel, Lot, Jeremiah, Ezekiel,
Amos, Jonah, Joshua and female names like Rachel, Ruth, Hannah, Sarah,
Zipporah, Jemima, Kezia, Kerenhappuch, Abigail, Mahala, Hephzibah are not
that uncommon in the West Country, some areas of the Midlands, and South
Wales in late 18th and early 19th century - and of course as family names
for a few generations after that. Whether sticking a pin in a page of the
Bible or careful selection of a name of a hero or heroine with character the
parents wanted their offspring to emulate it is often not possible to tell.
