Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me find Edward COLTMAN in
the Newport parish registers or other records. I have his death, census
records and births of his children but no other records.

He should have been born around 1811, according to census returns. All of
them (from 1851-71) state that he was born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales.
I haven't got him living there at all- he moved around from Bedfordshire to
Lancashire, Germany and Lincolnshire where he died. There seem to be no
other Coltmans in any census records born in Newport and I'm at a real dead
end with this family as I don't know his parents' names. He was a
brickmaker, which seems to be why he moved around a lot and I wonder if his
father was also a brickmaker, which may be why he was the only one of his
family born in Newport.

His first wife was Rebecca PARROTT, who he married before 1837. His second
wife was Elizabeth WAKEFIELD, who he married sometime in the 1840s. I can't
find their marriage and wonder if it might have been abroad. I ordered his
will to see if it might help, but it only lists his children and no brothers
or sisters.

Can anyone help me to break down this brickwall? I did begin to wonder if he
was actually born in Newport Pagnell, Bucks as this is close to where his
2nd wife was from, but the censuses consistently say Wales.

Thanks

Vicki
