Ally,

I know full well about looking for needles in haystacks; as if Williams was
not common enough, many of mine share the Christian names William, Philip
and Thomas. I even have trouble sorting out who is who in the same family!
I had a quick look at the Bassaleg Parish Register Transcriptions, but there
is no Mary Ann Williams in the 1797 to 1801 bit and 1802 to 1813 is not
transcribed. (I used www.genuki.org.uk to get to them, which is a very
useful site.)

Sir Joseph Bradney's History of Monmouthshire is the standard work, but it
mainly covers land owners, etc., and is not a lot of use for craftsmen,
traders and labourers. You can find some of the volumes on line at:

http://www.genebooks.com/bradney.shtml

The Joseph Herbert Canning collection covers Catholic families, so if your
family were not Catholic it won't be much help.

If you could tell me who Mary Ann Williams married, where and when, I will
keep my eyes open and pass on anything I notice.

Good luck with your research,

Peter Williams
