I think I found your Richard Meyrick on the 1850 census also. The
listing looks like Meylock, and indexed under Mylock, but I think its
the same person. I did a Google search and found the following;

It is obviously the same person you're looking for, and states he was in
California in 1849.

Google is a wonderful thing if you have an uncommon name.
