I had real trouble locating your PROWSE in Newport census
are the pages lost or misindexed?

PROWSE is quite close to PRICE which a local might use as a misspelling

from ap Rees . . .

Welsh: from one of the most common Welsh personal names, Rhys, Old
Welsh Ris 'ardor'. This was the name of the last ruler of an
independent kingdom of Wales, Rhys ap Tewder, who died in 1093
unsuccessfully opposing the Norman advance.

Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-508137-4

Prowse in Devon a variation on prue

1. English: nickname for a redoubtable warrior, from Middle English
prou(s) 'brave', 'valiant' (Old French proux, preux).

just wondering where the Newport Prowse are
