Subject: [MON] Abergavenny Removal Order DUNFORD and PHILLIPS
Date: Sat, 9 Feb 2008 21:37:59 -0000
I am researching the family of Richard PHILLIPS m Susannah DUNFORD IN Lewes
(Thomas a Becket) Sussex in 1797. Their son Richard PHILLIPS b Lewes 1803
married in Monmouthshire and settled in Pontnewynydd. I have found a
reference to a removal order for Ann DUNFORD in 1806 from Abergavenny to
Thomas a Becket. The link is

The link suggests evidence was taken from Susannah PHILLIPS and my guess is
she was Ann's daughter but the reference could be interpreted the other way,
namely Susanah PHILLIPS was the mother of Ann DUNFORD, presumably an
illegitimate child born before her maririage to Richard PHILLIPS. I would be
interested to know what other listers make of the removal order. Am I likely
to learn more if I check at Gwent Record Office?
Also, the Richard PHILLIPS who settled in Pontnewynydd was a wheelwright and
I have wondered for years how he came to move from Sussex to Monmouthshire,
I see from Abergavenny burials that there were numerous militia burials -
was there a barracks at Abergavenny in the early 1800s - is it feasible that
a Sussex militia spent time in Abergavenny bringing civilian tradesmen with
them?
