Yes it is true that St John's, Maindee was burnt down. My great-grandparents
were married there in 1874. (Richard John Talbot HILLIER and Sarah GUY)

There is an account at http://www.newportpast.com/hd/chronology.htm but that
web site seems to have problems at present.

>From the Google Cache of the site, the fire was on 12th November 1949, less
than a week after a fire at Christchurch, and re-opened on 25th September
1952.

It was not until 1955 that the church at Christchurch was re-opened.
