Subject: [MON] Archives event at the Senedd Monday 9 June - all Welcome
Date: Thu, 5 Jun 2008 16:33:42 -0000

I am forwarding a press release about a public event at the Senedd (Welsh
Assembly building) in Cardiff Bay on Monday 9th June from 11am to 4pm.
I'm not an expert on public transport to Cardiff Bay but I have seen bendy
buses down there, and I think Bute Road railway station is still
operational, though possibly renamed Cardiff Bay or something similar.

>> So, What's Your Story?
>>
>>
>>
>> For everyone who has ever wondered about the importance of all those
>> archives and records which make up the history of our communities, an
>> important event is taking place at the National Assembly for Wales on
>> Monday 9 June.
>>
>>
>>
>> With the first ever International Archives Day on 9 June, Wales'
>> contribution to this event is a public exhibition at the Senedd
>> showcasing the many exciting current projects and future developments for
>> archives in Wales. The event is being organised by the National Council
>> on Archives (NCA), Archives and Records Council Wales (ARCW) and
>> Community Archives Wales (CAW).
>>
>>
>>
>> A number of archives in Wales will be hosting stands at the event, which
>> runs from 11am to 4pm and is open to all. It is a chance for the wider
>> archives domain in Wales to show how it is developing to meet the
>> changing needs of its users. Particularly worth looking out for is the
>> new online archive catalogue of the National Library of Wales who will
>> also be exhibiting a facsimile copy of the Black Book of Carmarthen;
>> 'Coflein' the online resource created by the Royal Commission on the
>> Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales; and the exciting scheme for a
>> new home for the Glamorgan Record Office in the Leckwith Development in
>> Cardiff.
>>
>>
>>
>> There will also be archivists from Flintshire, Pembrokeshire, Powys, West
>> Glamorgan and Carmarthenshire on hand to tell you about their services
>> and how they can help you with your research.
>>
>>
>>
>> One of the major attractions will be the showcasing of a new website by
>> Community Archives Wales (CAW) www.ourwales.org.uk. CAW has over the last
>> 15 months been running a project to enable eleven groups within
>> Communities First areas throughout Wales to create their own digital
>> community archives and share them on the website. Digital community
>> archives are collections of material in private hands that have been
>> digitised and interpreted by community groups, enabling communities to
>> present their own history in their own words.
>>
>>
>>
>> The CAW initiative provides hands-on assistance and guidance to
>> communities in Wales so that they can record and share their own local
>> history on the Web. The local history and community groups which have
>> benefited from the project range from Nantlle in the north to Port Talbot
>> and Troedyrhiw in the south, and from the cosmopolitan buzz of Swansea to
>> the farms and villages of Cwmystywyth. However, as the digitised archives
>> are shared online, there are potentially millions of other beneficiaries,
>> who will be able to access the content virtually. Visitors to the
>> website can contribute their own comments and learn more about their own
>> and other communities in Wales.
>>
>>
>>
>> The project is funded by the European Union and Welsh Assembly Government
>> through the scheme and is managed by Culturenet Cymru
>> working in partnership with Glamorgan Record Office, West Glamorgan
>> Archive Service, Swansea University Archives, the South Wales Miners'
>> Library and the National Library of Wales.
>>
>> CAW Project manager Richard Roberts said: 'We are delighted at the
>> success of the Community Archives Wales project. I've been amazed by the
>> groups' passion for their local heritage and their eagerness to learn new
>> skills. It has been a pleasure to work with the groups, to learn about
>> the history of their local communities and to feel a growing sense of
>> unity and identity among them.'
>>
>>
>>
>> The archive services of Wales come together as a body in Archives and
>> Records Council Wales (ARCW). ARCW will be launching a document "A
>> Strategy for Archives in Wales 2008-2010" outlining its aims and
>> objectives for the archives domain in Wales, showing how archives can
>> play a part in:
>>
>>
>>
>> · helping to create a sense of identity and citizenship in Wales
>>
>> · encouraging individual learning and development
>>
>> · promoting social justice and equality
>>
>> · fostering a sense of community awareness and social cohesion
>>
>> · acting as agents for social change
>>
>>
>>
>> ARCW's strategy for 2008-10 also sets out how the archives sector in
>> Wales will be working towards achieving its objectives through a number
>> of strategic priorities over the next three years by:
>>
>>
>>
>> a.. Creating a national framework for archives in Wales
>> b.. Improving online resources for archives in Wales
>> c.. Building a marketing plan for archives in Wales
>> d.. Enlarging and enhancing archive collections in Wales
>> e.. Increasing capacity for public use of our services
>> f.. Developing our workforce
>> g.. Preserving electronic records
>>
>>
>> The Chair of ARCW, Kim Collis, said:
>>
>>
>>
>> "The archives domain in Wales clearly has an extensive role to play in
>> terms of the everyday lives of our citizens. Whether as a resource for
>> education, promoting opportunities for adult and continuing education,
>> providing a welcoming environment for people to learn more about the
>> communities they live in and where they come from, archives have a key
>> role to play in maintaining and improving civic life in Wales.
>>
>>
>>
>> "The Community Archives Wales project gives an example of the way in
>> which archives can be used both to improve ICT skills in the community
>> and to create a lasting digital resource which will build pride within
>> Wales for our unique heritage and history. These are qualities which are
>> close to the heart of all Assembly Members and I very much hope that the
>> Assembly public exhibition will help to bring the achievements of this
>> project to the attention of decision-makers in Welsh government.
>>
>>
>>
>> "In my own archive service, the new home for West Glamorgan Archives at
>> the revamped Civic Centre in Swansea places the service for the first
>> time at the very heart of a vibrant public space. Such innovative
>> solutions will really boost accessibility and public access to the
>> archives which are so important in telling the story of our lives and our
>> communities in Wales."
>>
>>
>>
>> The all-day event is open to the public. There is no need to ring or
>> book in advance, just feel free to call in at the National Assembly on
>> the 9th June between 11am and 4pm. The daytime activities will be
>> followed by an evening reception for Assembly Members.
