Hi Barbara,

He was an enumerator in 1871, as was Henry his eldest son.

Frederick is recorded properly, but doesn't come up on the search
engines behind ancestry's index. That's why you have to put in
Susannah's name to find him.

I agree that work is the most likely explanation for choosing Tredegar.
Although, by trawling street to street through Tredegar 1881 some months
ago, I did find a John Hayes from Kenton which is the parish which
Starcross became part of and which is just down the road from where
Arthur James was born. Not that he's easy to find either as his place of
birth on the ancestry index is given as "Stenton Dover"...as opposed to
Kenton, Devon which is what it actually says. These misstranscriptions
cause us all a lot of time an unnecessary effort!
