Hi-
I need some help understanding the 1920 Census.

The Enumerator Instructions for listing Mother and Father birthplace has exceptions when the person was listed as Indian race.
174a. For the Indian population, which is practically all of native parentage, these columns are to be used for a different purpose. In column 19 is to be entered, in place of the country of birth of the father, the degree of Indian blood, as, "full blood" or "mixed blood." In column 20 is to be entered, in place of the country of birth of the mother, the tribe to which the Indian belongs.

Would this mean what was entered in column 19 (example "full blood") refers to the person listed on the census or to his father's status.....and what was entered in column 20 refer to the person listed on the census or to his mothers status?

I have found time where "one-sixteenth" was entered in the father's place of birth and wondered if it meant the person listed or the father was "one-sixteenth" Indian.

Can anyone help? Caroline
