Hello all,
This is probably a stab in the dark, but I am looking for information
on John M. Jacobs and his Flathead daughter, Emma. In 1864 journals,
Jacobs is described as an "old Mountain Man.". His place in Montana
history is that he guided John Bozeman over what became the Bozeman
Trail. With Jacobs on this trek, was his 8yr. old daughter, Emma. I
have found reference in a letter in the Montana Historical Society
that Emma died in 1865 and is buried just off Prickly Pear Creek
south of Helena. After her death, Jacobs disappears from the
historical record. I need information that will help census etc. for
Jacobs before he fisrt appears in the historical record around 1850
at Ft. Owen in the Bitterroot. I did find that JAcobs voted at
Prickly Pear precinct in 1864. I have on order from the National
Archive Microfilm of the 1864-65 income tax list for Montana. When
that comes I might locate more information if he is listed as a tax
payer.
Anyway, when the Stuart brother settled in Montana in the Beaverhead
Valley, Jacobs and his family were also listed as living in teepees
along the creek. Jacobs also herded cattle for Johnny Grant. I think
I have pretty much combed the popular sources of early Montana
history. Now I'm seeking other sources that only those studying
genealogy might have knowledge.
thanks,
SUE
