Subject: [TNGILES] James Montgomery
My information on James Montgomery comes from the late Elmer O.Parker.
Below is from his obituary:
for the past 28 years Assistant Director of the National Archives,
Washington, D. C. Prior to his association with the National Archives,
he was a public school teacher and principal, and served as a first
lieutenant in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a graduate of
Brewton-Parker College and Georgia Southern University.
In 1975, his name appeared on the front page of the Wall Street Journal,
in Newsweek magazine, and in hundreds of newspapers across the land,
because Congress, on the basis of a discovery he made in the National
Archives, voted to restore the U. S. citizenship of General Robert E.
Lee, which had been lost when Lee led Confederate Armies in defense of
his native state during the War for Southern Independence. He was a well
known historian and genealogist and the author of several books,
including the History of Jones Creek Church. He was a member of that
church, and of the prestigious Jamestown Society.
James Montgomery b. c.1780 married Margaret Stephenson, daughter of
Robert Stephenson and Jane Barron, in 1808 in York Co,S.C. moved to
Giles Co,TN after he sold his York Co,S.C. property Oct. 6, 1815. They
seem to have had seven sons and two daughters. I understand that the
third child was Robert Stephenson Montgomery(1814-1885)who was
postmaster at Lynnville,Giles Co,TN 1868-1885.
In another letter,Mr. Parker wrote," If you look on p. 20 of the 1820
census of Giles Co,TN, I believe you will find Dorcas Barron, wife of
John Barron,James Montgomery, husband of Margaret Stephenson and Samuel
Stevenson(should be spelled Stephenson) who married Mary Shields and was
a brother to Margaret Stephenson.
One James Montgomery deeded to James Shields,Mar.16,1812,200 acres on
Big Creek in Second District.granted to Montgomery,June 15,1810--Giles
Co,TN deed book B,pp.59.
Seems doubtful this James Montgomery was the husband of Margaret
Stephenson. John Childress to James Montgomery and Thomas Stewart, both
of Giles Co,TN,Aug.13,1817,115 acres on both sides of Robertson's
Fork(Elk Ridge Church was on Robertson's Fork). Giles Co,Deed Book
C,p.139.
James Montgomery sold out in York County,S.C. on Oct. 28,1817,and
without doubt used a "new Wagon" he had bought at the estate sale of
William Byers Jr. and moved his family to Giles Co,TN. Evidently he went
to Giles county early in 1817 and bought land on August 13; then went
back to York Co,S.C. to get his family and bring them on to Giles
Co,TN."
Mr. Elmer O. Parker's great-grandmother married a son of John
Stephenson(1785-1845) who was a son of Robert Stephenson and Jane
Barron.
The Stephensons and Barrons settled on Robertson Fork and one of the
Barrons is buried in the Elk Ridge Cemetery.
