Dottie,
Birth and death records did not start in Ohio until the year 1867 and
even then they are VERY spotty with only about 40% of the actual births and
deaths being recorded. And they were not certificates as you would expect.
They were just records kept in a ledger book and the parents for the death
are only mentioned in about 1% of the cases and then only if it was a child
and they lived in the city of Dayton itself. When you get to the outlying
townships it gets worse.
Certificates did not really start until after 1909 or so again they
are spotty. My grandmother who was born in 1923 had to have her mother and my
great-uncle go to the Social Security building to apply for her SSI.
