LEFT AT CASTLE GARDEN
New York, July 6 - A little golden-haired girl crawled out from under a desk
in Castle Garden. All the emigrants had been sent away to their
destinations. She was a very pretty child, and her big eyes, turned
wistfully to the clerks and others, told plainer than the words she tried to
lisp that she was "losted." Adam Scheller, the ticket agent, took her into
his arms and said that he'd take her to his home and bring her up himself.
The little girl was comfortably dressed, but there was nothing about her
clothes by which to identify her. The Castle Garden officials think she
came ashore with her mother from one of the steamers, and that she was
either forgotten or deserted.
