Dear Dave,

I could be wrong, but I hear 2 different questions in the "lost message" discussion that just hit our List.

1. Your response to this issue, in today's email which started:

Hi folks,

like to
> know why - what did I do wrong?

seemed to get at the first question I hear -- some combination of:
"is my message 'lost'" OR "was my message 'censored'.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me there is an easy way for us all to check out whether or not our message got posted. All we need to do is go to our List's Archive Browsing page
(at address of http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/MOORE-RESEARCH/ )
and just take a look and confirm, once and for all, whether your message was posted, or not. I just now checked that Archive on the 2 threads that seem to relate to the issue we are talking about, and it looks up to date, as of the time I'm writing this email. And while in the Archive Browser, look at the replies that are shown and see if you got the reply -- if not, the culprit might also be your email service/server -- and their rules.

2. Several responders pointed out why we might not reply, or get a reply to a message. I don't get many if any answers to some of my postings. To me, that's the good news. Seems like people on this list ask more precise questions than I see on the several "-L", the non "RESEARCH-L" Lists that I belong to. And, with our list, I know right off if I have some data to contribute, or I don't. Precise questions save me time. Precise questions should increase the value of the responses you do get. BUT, precise questions are like a rifle shot -- if there's nothing out there to hit, you're not going to hear any sound. On the -L boards, there is more use of what I call the "shotgun" approach -- to which many people could reply something -- with low probability of getting back useful data -- because the question is so general as in "Hi, my grandmother's maiden name was Moore. Please Help." (That's a "slight" exaggeration, I'll admit). I'd rather have precise questions, and!
NO answers except when there is a close match. And, if you want more responses, also subscribe to the Moore-L List and ask questions that are more general -- and even then you may not hear back, or your question may sit there for a long time before it gets a reply.

PS -- For me, it has been sort of fun to have this brief show of emotion shown up on our otherwise "serious" and "staid" List. : )

There is a very good reason why your message of the 18th October didn't
make it to the list - you sent it to the *wrong* address. The only time
the address should be used is to
subscribe or unsubscribe.
This list is *not* moderated, censored or otherwise monitored so if your
message is sent to ~
it will be posted to the list.
Best wishes,
Dave Jassie - (List Administrator)
