Carolyn,
These Kirkland's were cousins to my grandfather, Jesse Bennett Kirkland.
James Paul Kirkland was married to Mary Satterfield. I have cut and pasted
an article from my notes:
Saturday, February 20, 1999 The Baxter Bulletin, Mountain Home, Arkansas,
by: Chrl Ripple, Bulletin Historian: J.P. Kirkland (1813-1887) was an
Indian agent who met a young Indian girl and wanted to marry her. She
agreed on the condition that he bring her to the land of her ancestors.
They traveled by covered wagon to Ozark County, MO, during the Civil War.
They homesteaded land in a hollow just west of what is now Howard's Ridge.
John Henry Harry Kirkland born December 17, 1871, and died June 3, 1958, was
one of J.P. Kirkland's sons. John Henry married Nancy Ida Mae Shrum, born
December 19, 1873, and died April 3, 1954. Ida's mother was part Indian,
and her father, J.M. Shrum (1848-1931), was a walking preacher. He traveled
southern Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma preaching the Gospel. John and Ida
Kirkland had eight children: Bonnie, Bert, Twins Maude and Claude, Roy,
Bessie, Tommie, and Johnnie D. Kirkland. Johnie D. Kirkland (March 4,
1915-May 2, 1972) married Mary Joan Hicks (born November 10, 1919) on April
21, 1935. Newspaper article was sent to Sonja Wood by Waukee Kirkland Poe.
sw
I have a Nancy Ida Mae Shrum (b: 12.19.1873) married to a John Harry Henry
Kirkland. Nancy's parents are showing as JM Shrum 1848 to 1931 and mother
as Part Indian (that's all I have on her).
Good luck, Sonja Wood in Kansas

> Hello,
> I have SHRUM desendants buried in Howards Ridge Cemetery located in Ozark
County Missouri near Gainsville, MO. I have a question about the wife of J.
P KIRKLAND who is buried in the middle of her husband and J.M SHRUM. Her
name is Mary KIRKLAND b. 1847. J.M. SHRUM and Mary KIRKLAND have the
identical headstones. I would just about bet my farm that Mary KIRKLAND and
J.M. SHRUM are brother and sister. J.M SHRUM had a sister named Mary born
1847. I really need to know!! Could you please direct me on how to find out
what Mary....wife of J.P. KIRKLAND'S maiden name was?
> This is how I connect with this family. My Sylvester Alexander HUGHES b.
1858 Franklin county Illinois married Sarah Elizabeth SHRUM b. 12/25/1852
Union county Illinois. They are my GGGRRANDPARENTS. From a stories I have
been told from a HUGHES desendant, they left Illinois to follow Sarah
SHRUM'S Indian family into Missouri and Oklahoma. I find Sylvester HUGHES
and Sarah living with a brother of Sarah's named James M. SHRUM and his wife
Nancy RICH SHRUM and their children in the 1880 Ozark County Census in 136
Bridges twp. James M and Nancy's children are listed as Mary E. SHRUM,
James W. SHRUM, Ida May SHRUM, Cora I. SHRUM , and Joel G. SHRUM on the
census. Most of these people are buried in Howards Ridge Cemetery.
However, there are some SHRUMS buried in Poteau Oklahoma with my
GGGrandparents, Sylvester Alexander HUGHES and Sarah Elizabeth SHRUM HUGHES
in LeFlores County Vaughn Cemetery. I look forward to hearing from anyone
with information about these families! !
