Rachel:

You responded to my query to Peggy Gibbons sometime ago regarding Silas
BELL who married Mary Ellen LOW in Ozark County in 1872. I received the
most recent issue of THE OLD MILL RUN which is published quarterly by the
Ozark County Genealogical and Historical Society. I don't know if you're
a member of the OCG&HS or not, but in the event that you are not, the
current issue of the quarterly includes the 1885 Ozark County Personal
Tax List for Richland and Bayou Townships. I found the following BELL's
who were shown in Richland Township:

BELL, John W.
BELL, John
BELL, Henry

It seems that the BELL's of Ozark County, no matter who they were, were
in Richland Township (northeastern part of the county). Is one of these
your John BELL?

I don't know if personal tax at that time was based on land owned or just
how it was determined. Perhaps someone on the mail list can elaborate on
this and shed some light on it. It is indicated that the listing of the
1885 personal tax list will continue in the next issue. There is a note
in a preamble to the list which states, "These are listed alphabetically
under each township by the head of the household's name. Some of them
have written after the name 'gone,' and a few have the county which they
lived in 1885 or 1886, which will give a clue to where next to look for
them." Such notations did not appear after any of the names that
appeared for Richland or Bayou Townships. Perhaps, whoever entered them
for the quarterly left those notations out. The list was for 1885 only.
