Hi Bill,
Here is that email that was sent to me about Richard Durham and the
Bushwhackers.
Kind Regards,
Julie Hamilton
PS...Laine also told me to tread carefully because there were some Alsup
desc on the mailing list.

Hi,
I can't tell you where Lucinda is buried, but I can tell you where Richard
is
buried. He is in a very small family cemetery on the land where he and
Lizzie lived before he died. His tombstone reads: Richard V. Durham, hus
of Lizzie Oct 30, 1825 - 1862 (part of the stone is broken) I would very
much like to hear what you know about Richard. My gggf bought the "Durham
place" in about 1875 (William and Phoebe Sutherland.) I don't know who he
bought the farm from.... or why/how Richard died. I can tell you what the
family oral history is; how much truth there is in it, I don't know.
The story I have heard: Richard was shot by bushwackers (allegedly one of
the Alsup brothers) off his front porch. Douglas County was a hotbed of
Rebels vs. Union and this murder had something to do with the Civil
War....maybe Richard was a Confederate sympathizer - the Alsups were
Union....I don't know. I assume my gggf bought the farm from Lizzie, but I
don't know for sure. Before moving to Douglas County Wm. & Phoebe had lived
in Gasconade County. Allegedly, Wm traded land for the Durham property.
As far as I know, the only other people in this little cemetery are the
son-in-law of Wm. & Phoebe, Richard Grimes, and his child who died in
infancy.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Laine

have within the past year published several local history books, and I
understand what you are saying about the folklore or legend that gets
inter-twined into our history. Sometimes a little legend adds to the story,
but I try to make the story as factual as possible.
