I've found many misspellings as well - on the ancestry page, Elizabeth
Ellsworth Prather's work (some really ridiculous!), on censuses, and in the
Marriage books themselves at the courthouse. I was puzzled when I couldn't
find my gr-gr-grandparents' marriage entry in the index. I found it on a
return trip - it was entered as "McEfee" instead of "McAfee", and I hadn't
thought to look up any variants. Mistakes abound - Nicia later applied for a
widow's pension and the county clerk supplied her with a statement certifying
her marriage to Elijah McAfee, but instead of the actual marriage date he
gave the date it was recorded, which was several months later. She couldn't
read nor sign her name and didn't know the difference. She was generally
called "Nicey" (notice how they frequently did that - Sary, Janie, Chaney,
etc.), but I've seen it as Nica, Dica, Dicey, and Nancy. I think one just
has to take the possible variations into consideration.

Has anyone found problems with the dates? That would concern me more than the
spelling.

Cheryl
