Recently I posted a query about this family. I have a little more
information AND speculation. I was going through my notebook files (a good
idea once in a while <smile>) and was looking at the copy of the 1910 Ray
Co. census page where our Arnold/Hockensmith family is found. We've had
such a hard time with them that I keep thinking something will jump off of
a page somewhere and solve the puzzle. Well, I didn't learn much more about
them, but guess who is living in the previous household!! John and Saloma
Bates--(music of "Twilight Zone" here).

According to the census page, this is their household at that time:

Bates, John F. 50 Missouri Virginia Missouri
(I know it's John T., but there is definitely a "crossbar," making it look
like an "F")
Saloma 52 Missouri Missouri Missouri
Arthur F. 24 " " "
(Same thing with "T" crossed to look like an "F")
Mary M. 17 " " "
Emma M. 15 " " "

So I still don't know if Andrew W. "Andy" Bates is a son. He married in
1908 and probably was living elsewhere. I didn't have Mary M.'s name
before. I wonder if she is the "Mrs. Fred Summers" mentioned in the obits
Carol has posted recently? Does anyone know about Andy or Mary?

Lorraine would have been gone by this time, having died in 1909. In my
notes I found, "Engraved on tombstone, 'Beneath this stone, in soft repose,
is laid a mother's dearest pride.' " Isn't that nice?
