Surname: McKown
-------------------------
I have just transcribed the will of my great-great-grandfather Isaac McKown,
Sr., and posted it on the Ray County Rootsweb site. In it are bequests
to his daughters and to these sons: Samuel, John, and Isaac, Jr. His beloved
sons Samuel and John are each bequeathed one dollar, whereas Isaac, Jr.,
inherits real estate plus stock, etc. In addition, Isaac, Sr., leaves a
generous bequest for his two minor grandsons Joseph and Preston McKown,
sons of James W. McKown. From this I deduce that James W. McKown died before
30 Apr 1851, the date the will was written.
In the 1850 census of Ray County Joseph McKown, age 7, and Preston McKown,
age 5, are living with Henry McKown (age 22), Susan (age 24), and Elizabeth
(age 1).
According to Ray County records Henry McKown and Susan McKown were married
20 May 1848.
So it appears that Susan, the mother of Joseph and Preston and widow of
James W. McKown, married Henry McKown and together they had a daughter
Elizabeth born abt. 1849. Almost certainly Henry McKown is not a son of
Isaac, Sr., or he would have been mentioned in the will and left at least
$1 for legal reasons. So the question now is: Who is Henry McKown? Is he
related to Isaac McKowns family (other than by marriage)?
