Hi Peter

Here is an entry I found in the 1881 Census CD.

Dwelling: North Row No 12
Census Place: St Andrews Lhanbryd, Elgin, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203435 GRO Ref Volume 142 EnumDist 5 Page

John MENZIES M 36 M New Spynie, Elgin, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Wool Manufacturer
Isabella MENZIES U 30 F St And Lhan, Elgin, Scotland
Rel: Dau
Occ: Gen Serv (Dom)
Hellen MENZIES U 20 F St And Lhan, Elgin, Scotland
Rel: Dau
Occ: Gen Serv (Dom)
Charles MENZIES 5 M St And Lhan, Elgin, Scotland
Rel: Grand Child

You will see from the above that Alexander is married but there is no trace
of his wife Elizabeth. However a further search produced the following entry:

Dwelling: Cottage At Stronhill
Census Place: St Andrews Lhanbryd, Elgin, Scotland

George REID 3 M St Andrews, Elgin, Scotland
Rel: Gson
Elizabeth MENZIES M 59 F Duffus, Elgin, Scotland
Rel: Lodger
Occ: Midwife

Here we have an Elizabeth Menzies who was born at Duffus and whose age
matches that given in the 1961 Census. Her occupation is Midwife and it is probable
that she was attending to the birth of a child at the McDonald household hence
the reason for her absence from home on the census night. You will also see
that John Menzies, Alexander's son is now described in the first entry as a
Wool Manufacturer and that while he is at his fathers address at the time of the
1881 census possibly with his son Charles there is no mention of his wife.

A search of the IGI produced a marriage in Speymouth on 5 August 1870 showing
that a John Menzies married a Jane Russell. A search for Jane Menzies in the
1881 Census CD produced this entry:

Dwelling: 23rd House
Census Place: Dallas, Elgin, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203431 GRO Ref Volume 129 EnumDist 6 Page

Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Jane MENZIES M 35 F Speymouth, Elgin, Scotland

Rel: Dau
Occ: Scholar
James MENZIES 4 M Huntly, Aberdeen, Scotland
Rel: Son
William G. MENZIES 1 M St Andrews, Elgin, Scotland
Rel: Son

In this entry you will notice that Jane Menzies is married and she is
described as a manufacturer's wife. This together with the ages of the children would
appear to tie this Jane Menzies to John Menzies as being husband and wife
with John being on an overnight visit to his father's home.

I hope this is of some interest to you and a little to add to what you
already have. If you already have all this information there is no harm done.

I will have a further look at the 1881 Census CD for any more of the family
that might be there and let you have any information I find. In the meantime
many thanks for replying to my message, it was the first time I have found any
connection mentioned on the Moray List although there is a strong family
connection with the area.

My 2 x Great Grandfather, Alexander Scott, lived all his days at
Auchenhalrig, Enzie and the following report was carried by the Northern Scot on the
occasion of his Golden Wedding:

The Northern Scot dated 16 September 1893 carried a report on their Golden
Wedding which read as follows:

On Friday, Mr & Mrs Alex Scott, Auchinhalrig, celebrated their golden wedding
under the same roof where the nuptial knot was tied fifty years before.
Several members of their family and a few friends were present, a very happy
evening being spent. It is worthy of remark that Mr Scott has been in the service of
the Duke of Richmond and Gordon at the sawmill during all his long period of
married life, during which time, as his home is some three miles from his
work, he has walked (says our correspondent) considerably over 90,000 miles, or
well nigh four times round the world.

I have mentioned this simply because it does tell you about the way our
ancestors lived and worked in days gone by. 90,000 miles sounds like the life span
of a car nowadays!

Regards

Ian
