There is one way of assessing the reliability of some of the information in
the IGI.
If the event was in Scotland before 1875, the entry says "Extracted ...."
and the batch no begins with either C11.... or M11.... the information is
almost certainly from the relevant parish register and is therefore both
fairly reliable and relatively easy to check.
It's the "submitted" entries that may be unreliable (in some cases these too
are from parish registers, though there is no way of telling this from the
entry details).
