Subject: [MORIPLEY] 1890 Platt Map needs saving... help!
Date: Sun, 8 Jul 2001 20:12:23 -0500

Well group, I wanted to let you know that I had a very interesting trip to
Doniphan this past week. A genealogy research trip of course.

I found many interesting things and many leads to further my personal family
research.

The one thing I found that effects you all is this. Last year I told you
all that there is a map at the courthouse dated 1890. It's a Platt map that
shows the location of each landowner and the amount of his taxes written in
by hand where their land was. It's invaluable due to the lack of an 1890
Census. And you can look at it in a glance and see who your families
neighbors were.

I approached the historical society president at that time about getting
this map copied so it will be preserved. Nothing done yet. It is noted on
the box it is in that it was microfilmed by the state archives. I've asked
two different people that were making trips to the state archives to look
for it. Neither could find it. If you make a trip to the Doniphan
courthouse they
will willingly copy it for you. The problem with that is, it is so fragile
that it is crumbling. Something must be done to preserve this map. So at
this point I have done two things. I did have the whole thing copied. It
is so large that it wont copy on their big copier and their largest paper so
they had to copy each page twice to get the whole page. They are mailing it
to me when it is done. The next thing I did was visit with the county
commission to ask if I could get it copied professionally. Their proposal
to me was as expected, "we can not let you take the original document from
the courthouse". But they did agree, that if I can find a bonded, insured
place that will copy it, they will mail it to them insured for copying.
If you are interested in helping with this project I need you to let me know
as
soon as possible. Email me privately and I will discuss it with you off
list.

When I get my copy of the map, I will be able to do some lookups. They will
be limited to one specific name and only if you have at least the township
and range so I can narrow it down. There is no index and one lookup could
take quite a while to do. I will be happy to do it though if you will work
with me.

Please let me know what you all think.
