Hi everyone,
Please can anyone explain an entry I found in the 1851 census:
James age 31 Head
Eliza age 24 Wife
Thomas (different surname) Son in law age 13
Benjamin Son age 11
Abraham Son age 6
Emily (different surname to anyone else) Daughter in law age 2
If these were the illegitimate children of James they would surely still be
his son & daughter and Eliza isn't old enough to be the mother of Thomas,
Benjamin must also have a different mother (possibly a first wife).
I suppose Thomas could have been an illegitimate child of James's first wife
(if he had one), but that wouldn't explain Emily.
If anyone has an explanation for the term 'in law' I would gratefully
appreciate it.
Thanks
Teresa
