I have found out a bit more on the boys who were involved in the shooting
with the U.S. Soldier on guard duty.
Perry Franklin Harris was b. 8/16/1898 in Doe Run, Mo. and d. 5/20/1962 in
Elvins, Mo. and is buried in Elvins, Mo. at Layne Cemetery. If this incident
happened in 8/1918 then Perry would have been approximately 20 years old.
I believe Clyde Maxson was the son of George Walter Maxson and Birdie M.
Halbrook Maxson. If this is true, then Clyde Maxson was born on 7/18/1910 in
Elvins, Mo. and died 2/26/1991 in Elvins, Mo.
and is buried in Farmington, Mo. St. Francois Co. in the Lutheran Cemetery.
At the time of the shooting Clyde would have been 8 years old.
According to the 1910 census for St. Francois Co., Mo., Green Sumpter was
actually Greenberry Sumpter born about 1871 in Missouri. His wife was
Lucinda A. born about 1875 in Missouri. They appear to have been married
about 1889 and in the census it lists them as having had 10 children but
only 4 are living in 1910. One of those four is "Archibald Sumpter" age 6.
"Archie's age in the census various about 2 years from that listed in the
obituary but it is my experience that is not uncommon.
Perry Harris and Clyde Maxsons obituaries can be found in the "Farmington
Library Section" of the St. Francois Co., web site.
I did not find one for Archie Sumpter though.
I hope this clarifies some of the details for anyone who is interested in
this article. I was interested because James Monroe Harris was one of my
great-grandfathers.
