Keith,
How exciting! Annie B. Long (wife of Green F. Sappington) was my Great
grandmother's sister. Annie was the daughter of Nicholas Long, grand daughter
of James and Leah Long and gt grand daughter of Lawrence & Priscilla Long.
John Fenton LOng was the son of William Lindsay Long. William L. Long laid
out the town of Fenton, named for his mother's mother. John Fenton Long
I assume was named for her also. He was the grandson of Captain John Long
a Rev War veteran and also ship's Captain that sailed between the States
and England. John Fenton Long was a school teacher in the Gravois Settlement
in 1836, on what has since been called the Grant farm and taught there
for eight years He later became a Judge and was a close friend of Gen.
Grant and was invited to the White House when Grant was President. Seems
he had taught President Grant's wife Julia Dent in his school and had given
her a whipping, all of this according to Thomas' History of St. Louis County.
I would be very interested in hearing more about the letters from him to
your gt gt grandfather. What year were they written.
Do you know what happened to Green Sappington? He and Annie were living
in Bonhomme in 1870. In 1874 she remarried to JAcob Schrepfer.
Chris
