Message Board Post:

Hi Chaz,

I wanted to emphasize "Snow", not shout at you. My nephew by marriage, who is living and whose surname is Dane, is Jehu's second grand nephew by blood through Amanda Garrett, Jehu's half sister. Amanda married David Davidson Dane.

This is what I have on Jehu. I would welcome corrections; Elizabeth Jane could be a Wood instead of a Snow. The only official records of her maiden name I have found so far are their marriage record, in which she is "Suon", and son Oscar's 24 May 1939 Texas Death certificate, in which Jehu is "James F" and Elizabeth Jane is "Jane Snow". (Jehu was "James" in 1910, the old rascal.)

It isn't complete. I'm working my way through the children as time and wife allow. I'm on Oscar Sylvester today.

In 1910 the railroad sent him to Oklahoma.

"John" was 25 at first marriage, Julia 16.
The man below Jehu's family works for a steam railway; I suspect Jehu worked in a railroad car shop, not an automobile one.

----------

As of August 2011, Jehu had three Find-a-Grave entries, with none of them completely correct.

(It looks like a modern tombstone, though.)
Burial: Freedom , Willow Springs, Howell, Missouri

Memorial 35666330, Created by Diana Kimes
Samuell Jehu Garrett
Birth: Nov. 13, 1866
Death: Jul. 30, 1930

Freedom Cemetery, Sargent Twp, Texas, Missouri

-----------

Here is his death certificate:

Place of death: Greene County, Springfield, Mo, St. John's Hospital
Full name: Jay S. Garrett
Residence: Willow Springs, Mo
Male, white, widowed
Death Date: June 16, 1930
Wife: Jennie Garrett (Deceased)
Birth: Unknown
Age: about 63
Occupation: Retired Frisco Carpenter [Frisco was a railroad]
Birthplace, mother, father: Unknown
Informant: Cora Garrett, Springfield, Mo
Place of Burial: Willow Springs, Mo

----------

It looks to me like:

He died in Springfield on June 16 while visiting his daughter Cora, but he lived in Willow Springs.

JMW assumed "Place of Burial: Willow Springs, Mo" meant the city cemetery.

Nancy Garrett assumed that if he lived there in Willow Springs, he died there.

The tombstone was replaced, sometime 1960 - 1990, and they somehow got the wrong death date chiseled in stone.

JMW was working from the death certificate alone.

Nancy Garrett was working from the tombstone in the Freedom Cemetery alone - plus family memories.

Cora Garrett, the informant, didn't think much of Julia Swecker, Jehu's second wife.

Diana Kimes didn't have the death certificate either. She got the county right. Sargent Township, and the also crossroads known as Sargent, are in Texas County. The Freedom cemetery looks to be two miles or so north of the Howell county line, in Texas County

----------

Given the error in the death place, I suspect the birth place on Nancy Garrett's Find-a-Grave entry is in error too. I'd bet he was born in either Texas County, where his family was in 1860, or Dallas County, where they were in 1870.
