Van Ness Tanner, age 80, died November 9, 2008 in Winter Park, Florida. He
was born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 11, 1928 to Lenora Van Ness Tanner
and William Robert Tanner; he was a member of the Episcopal Church. After
serving in the Air Force. His long career included many interesting projects
throughout the Southeast in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida.
Van was an avid sailor acting as navigator on many long distance races
throughout the Gulf of Mexico. He was passionate about sailing and celestial
navigation and loved to share this passion with his family and friends. He
was an active member of the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club, where he served as
commodore in 1994, and the Pass Christian Yacht Club. Van passed his love of
sailing on to his grandchildren, hosting "Camp Tanner" every summer.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Yvonne Brown Tanner; half brother
Brooks Jeffery of Redington Beach, Florida; children Charles R. Tanner of
Indialantic, Florida, Philip G. Tanner and Laurent Tanner of Winter Park,
Florida; and four grandchildren, Philip G. Tanner, II, Erik M. Tanner,
Peyton R. Tanner and Austin R. Tanner.
A memorial gathering will be held at a later date in Mississippi to scatter
his ashes in the Mississippi Sound in fulfillment of his wishes.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Library Foundation of
Hancock County (312 Hwy 90, Bay St. Louis, MS 39520) or to the charity of
your choice.
