see reply to joyce---if you are not aware of the provision in the DAR
membership for exclusion for other than proof of ancestory you might want to
read the membership rules. The term "blackball" is not mine--it has been
used for many years to describe elitist groups who select membership on the
basis of "social standing" or other whims of the members---and if you have
any question about the DAR discriminating you might go back to the time
Eleanor Roosevelt resigned and arranged for Marion Anderson to sing at the
Lincoln Memorial because DAR would not let a Black sing at Constitution
Hall. I have been told that they have cleaned up their act somewhat since
then but not nearly enough to escape the Blackball label. Kate
