Thank you Tony Miller and Ann Brown for helping me with the Torrey family genealogy and with unraveling the land transactions of the Hickory Block Cemetery. I did find a 1906 land deed where Mrs. M. I. and D. C. Warren (Mary Inez Torrey Warren and Daniel Cameron Warren) conveyed to the trustees of the Hickory Block Church land for the cemetery. The oldest headstone in the cemetery is that of James Burnett who died in 1888. James and his parents Robert and Jane Burnett were the slaves of John Torrey in Jefferson County. I believe burials occurred before 1888 and that this section of land may have been used for burial of the Torrey slaves.
According to the notes of Miss Lottie Warren, the 56 colored members of Union Church Presbyterian Church left the Union Church congregation after Emancipation and formed their own church named Hickory Block. Those same notes reference that Miss Lottie's mother taught religious teachings to the children of the slaves. I wonder if this was the earliest start of the Hickory Block Church.
The Torrey family was instrumental to the establishment of Hickory Block. In 1893 and 1899 James Edgar Torrey and the heirs of Mary Inez Torrey Warren sold land to the trustees of the church where the current church now sits.
Miss Lottie Warren was the daughter of Daniel C. and Mary Inez Torrey Warren. Mary Inez was the daughter of Robert Dougald Torrey and Mary McNair. James Edgar Torrey was the son of Robert Dougald Torrey and his second wife Mary Patterson.
