Hi Sue,

A soldier would have been "discharged" if he left the service due to his wounds. Or if his service ended before the surrender. He would have been "released" if he had been captured and was in a POW camp
at the end of the war. If he served to the end of the war, he would have been "paroled" from crimes against the United States.
