Does anyone know anything that can help?
I don't.
But there are DNA tests that I've been thinking about taking.
http://www.ancestry.com and http://www.familytreedna.com/ talk about these
tests. The latter is in association with the University of Arizona. There
are DNA tests for men and women. The tests can match up people who have
ancestry in common - like cousins - if people want to be matched up. They
can also test for native American ancestry, Cohanim ancestry, and ???
Organizations can set up projects to try to reconstruct surname lines. (I
have a Bates ancestor, so I learned that two Bates organizations have a
project going to try to reconstruct Bates lines (y-chromosome test for men,
but there are tests for women too). Also, I learned that projects, like the
Bates project, can be set up. Interestingly, they lessen the cost of the
testing because a group of people are taking the same tests.)
I'm not associated with the companies that do the testing. I'm just
interested in the potential results.
Sorry, I just let the ardent genealogist break through. My husband is always
walking into the room, and if I'm on the computer, asking what century I'm
in now. Maybe you have the same experiences with your family.
