Hi, Sara,

I don't know how much help this will be but there are McCLENDON's that are, somehow, related to my LOTT and HATTEN families out of Mississippi, some in Jasper County, and my LOTT-HATTEN family, with the marriage of my maternal 3rd gr. grandmother, Frances Lucretia "Patsy" LOTT, born: abt. 1802 in MS, and husband, William HATTEN, born: 1800 in Tar River, Nash Co., NC, who lived in MS and then in Jackson/Ouachita Parish, LA where Frances died in 1840, then he went into Winn Parish, LA where he was the 1st Coroner of the Parish and he married 2nd wife, Anna "Annie" NETTLES.

If my memory is serving me correctly, there is one of the descendants of this family group whom is a researcher currently online doing research that is of the last name McCLENDON and has, I believe, information in the World Connect section at www.rootsweb.com ....whether or not it includes the LOPERs though, I don't know. There is a tragic connection between one of the branches of my HATTEN-LOTT-JONES-McCARTY-SPRADLEY family group and the LOPER family in Newton County, MS.

I descend through Frances and William's son, Lawrence M. HATTEN, (CSA/died POW,) and his wife, Frances Ann GRISHAM/GRESHAM, (aka GRISSOM/GRISSON,) whose 2nd husband was Zachariah Taylor "Zachary/Zack" FAITH, who was stepfather to my great grandfather, Cicero Lamkin HATTEN, who married Rodella "Della" JONES, born in the 1860s in Winn Parish, LA, whose parents were William Tunley JONES, (CSA,) and Martha Ann Caroline Matilda? "Caroline" McCARTY whose parents were Hiram McCARTY and 1st wife, Nancy SPRADLEY, whose parents were Mary McCAIN and William Elias SPRADLEY, Sr. of Newton County, Mississippi.

Mary McCAIN and William Elias SPRADLEY, Sr. also had a son named William Elias SPRADLEY, Jr. who killed a man, (for what reasons or situation...I don't know,) named Absalom/Absolom LOPER, shown in the following information. There were also BRIGHTs and AMMONDS in Newton County, MS who may, also, be related to my AMMONDS lineage and the BRIGHT lineage that married into my paternal lines out of Simpson, Rankin, Copiah, Smith, Jasper, Jones, Perry Counties in Mississippi. From this page of LOPER information there are some that are, also, shown in Jasper County, MS.

My Nancy SPRADLEY's brother, William Elias SPRADLEY, Jr., was the 1st husband of Sarah Eliza/Elizabeth McCRAVEN who later married Wiley H. LANDRUM. Some of my SPRADLEY's were, also, in Wayne County, Mississippi including this family group of William Elias SPRADLEY, Jr. & Sarah Eliza/Elizabeth McCRAVEN and her 2nd husband, Wiley H. LANDRUM.

Hopefully, this information might give you something more to work with.

Sincerely,

Bellinda Myrick-Barnett

History of Newton County, Mississippi
FROM 1834 TO 1894.
BY A. J. BROWN, OF NEWTON COUNTY.

[page 39, par 1]
In the northwestern part were the Ames, Bright Ammonds, (probably
the first white settler in that part of the county), the Paces,
Ben Bright, Coot and Sid Sellars, Volentines, Wm. Spradley, Absalom
Loper, the Wares, Dempsey Smith, Cornelius Boyd and James Anderson.

[page 39, par 2]
Those just west of Decatur, Hamilton Cooper, B. S. and Joel Loper,
Hollingsworths

[page 50, par 1]
Long ago the town of Decatur was noted for the number of men killed
in it. It was reported that sixteen or eighteen men had lost their
lives in the town. From careful inquiry and comparison with the old
men and women of the county, only nine persons lost their lives in
deadly combat. There were several persons who were accidently killed,
and one who suicided, and they may be included in the number above stated.

[page 50, par 2]
The following are the men who were killed and the parties committing
the deed and are given in the order of their committing as correctly
as can be ascertained: Joshua Tatum killed Hezekiah Hargrove; Thos.
Redwine killed George McAlpin; Dr. Bailey Johnson killed Adams; James
Ellis killed Neighbors; William Spradley killed Absalom Loper, Jr.;
Buckhannan killed Leslie; Cornelius Mann killed Cordaway; Martin killed
Vance.

Message Board Post:

I have posted this message under the Pace Surname message board as well.

My ancestor was Charles Washington McClendon, son of Lewis Bruce McClendon &
Sarah Sides. His wife was Martha "Mattie" Bufkin daughter of Isaac Bufkin &
Caroline Loper. One of his daughters, Sarah Jane McClendon, married James Willis
Pace, son of James Dempsey Pace & Amelia Lucy Gregory. (This is according to a
bio in the Falls, TX collection.)

After the war between the states, CW and James Willis along with some other
Pace-Bufkin-McClendon family members moved to Texas. James Willis Pace was not
only my ancestor's brother-in-law, but also a witness for CW's Confederate
Pension file in Texas. One of his daughters then married a Bufkin 1st cousin so
these families are all tied together.

Although I do not actually descend from this Pace line, I am interested in
finding the names of the children of James Dempsey and Amelia. What I currently
have is John Pace killed at Fredericksburg during the war, and William J. Pace
who also moved to Texas.

I found Paces next to or near my McClendon family as well as Bufkin and Loper
families in Newton County, MS census records. I now have so many Pace, Bufkin,
McLendon, McClendon, & Loper names chasing each other, I am having trouble
finding which belongs to which.

Any help would be appreciated.
