NEWS RELEASE SMITH COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
P.O. Box 356,
RALEIGH, MS 39153
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 27, 2001
The Smith County Genealogical Society has an ongoing project to compile
and publish a book featuring Smith County family histories and
individual military service. Project Committee Chairman, Charlotte Webb
says that family histories and military veteran information is important
to Smith County as it is part of our heritage and needs to be preserved
before being lost.
People with ties now or in the past to Smith County as well as future
generations will benefit from this effort.
Webb says that anyone who now lives, has ever lived in, or has family
ties to Smith County is encouraged to submit individual family histories
and military veteran service. There will be NO CHARGE to have the items
published in the book. Each history and veteran account are to be
considered and submitted as separate items and will be allowed up to 750
words with one photograph at no cost or 900 words with no photograph. A
fee of 10 cents per word for each additional word up to a maximum of
1,000 words and $15.00 per extra photo will be charged.
Each item submitted should be on 8 ½ X 11 inch paper and if possible,
typed and double spaced. Hand written accounts will be accepted. Only
narrative forms will be accepted. Genealogical charts, books, or tabular
material will not be accepted. Photographs need the following
information on the back: names, date of photo (if known), and short
description of the picture, and submitter's name and address/telephone
number. Photographs need to be originals or professional copy. Do not
send copy machine copies; these can not be used. Photos will be returned
after being copied.
Veteran information will be a separate section in the book, and
information submitted should include name, parents, spouse, children,
date of service, branch of service, rank, where served, discharge date
and other pertinent information related to military service. Of special
interest would be an outstanding memory or account during military
service. If available, a photo in uniform would be great.
Webb says this is a unique opportunity to get family histories and
military service documented for today and years to come. The deadline
for getting items into the Smith County Genealogical Society to be
included in the book is January 30, 2002. This gives everyone time to
gather up information and photographs and prepare their stories. Don't
let these important legacies become lost in time. Preserve them in this
special book. Questions about this project can be directed to any one of
the following persons.
