Old Homes in the County
The Old McDougal Home
About eight miles from Iuka, is the old McDougal place, which was built before
the Civil War. The house was built of logs and ceiled inside with wide planks
and outside was dabbed with clay. There are two large rooms with a hall between
them. It is in good condition at present.
The Old Dean Home
Mr. Pleas Dean's home is standing on the old Dean homeplace, about five miles
from Iuka. It is made of logs with were hewn by Negro slaves and the logs are
of virgin pine that grew on the plantation. The logs were hauled by the slaves
and drawn by oxen teams. The house has two rooms with a wide hall between, two
large open fireplaces of unusual size. The house has been added to and some
parts removed at various times. It was first covered with hand drawn shingles,
and the floors were very rough and crude but has become smooth by constant wear
and scrubbing.
The Old Hubbard Home
About twelve miles north from Iuka is located the old Hubbard home. It is
constructed of lumber but was built before the Civil War. It is in very good
shape. With little repair, it would be very comfortable. There are three
rooms, one porch, and is heated by means of open fireplaces. It is occupied at
this time. In this home has been born and reared several generations, and there
was one son that reached the point of importance, Dr. Dan Hubbard, who spent
the best of his life ministering to the needy of his community. Mrs. A. Hubbard
of this family has been living in the old home. It isn't built on a special
architecture, merely a crude old southern style. In this home there are some
old historic articles, such as an old trunk, which has been in the family for
about 75 years; it is 2 X 3 feet. There is an old Broach pin of his mother's;
it is a small bar and is near 75 years old. She has a complete set of deer
horns and hoofs mounted which was sent to her by her son, Guy Hubbard, from Bay
Horse, Montana. She also has a string of handmade wooden beads of different
colors and shapes that were made in Gillett, Wyoming.
The Old David Hubbard Home
Mr. Hubbard was one of the pioneers of Iuka. He once owned most of the town
site. He gave of his best to the beginning of the town (Iuka). His home was at
the present site known to the majority as the Miss Sallie Hubbard home. It
faces the southern railroad, and the old stagecoach route, which was in
operation during the Civil War. This home was built in 1852-53 by David Hubbard
Jr. before the town was built. It is a two story with a wide front porch. All
the timber used in this house was hand planed. The rooms are large, the
staircase is unusual, and there is no furniture in use that was used by the
Hubbards but it is stored away in one room and the remaining rooms are rented
as an apartment. The family has retained possession of this home since it was
built.
There are bullet holes where bullets pierced the walls in the Battle of Iuka,
September 19, 1862. The house has recently been repaired and some modern
conveniences added.
The Old Dean Home (in the fourth district)
Mrs. T. P. Dean has a center table that was made by her grandfather. It is
about eighty years old and is 1-½ X 2 ½ feet with one drawer and is in very
fair condition. She has a weight clock once belonged to Mr. Dean's
grandfather. It has been in the family for more than 100 years. The works are
made of wood but does not keep time anymore. They have a gold pin with the
word "Baby" engraved on it. Mrs. Dean's mother gave it to her more than fifty
years ago. She has a black leather shot sack 6 x 4 inches, that her great
grandfather brought with him from Ireland when he immigrated to America more
than two hundred years ago. It is in good care and it is 6 x 4 inches. They
have some old historic papers, such as old, old deeds, etc. that have been in
the Dean family for many years.
