SOLOMON and ANN HAUSKAMA - by Lulu Koskela and Viana Erickson

Solomon and Anna Hauskama were both born in Finland. They met in Belt where they were married. There they operated a boarding house for several years for men employed at the mines. It burned and they built a small house in which they lived until they moved to the ranch.
Solomon was a blacksmith and had a blacksmith shop in Belt where he shod horses and sharpened glow shares. He also worked in the Merkle mine. Solomon played the slide trombone in the Belt band and was an accomplished violinist. He wrote music for his own enjoyment and played it on the violin at the dances with his son Sanfred chording on the pump organ. After they moved to their ranch thirteen miles east of Belt, the people in that community built a dance hall where Solomon and Sanfred played for dances and other activities. He gave violin lessons and taught music to all his children. Lulu remembers singing Finnish songs for people when she was only 3 or 4 years old. Her father accompanied her on the violin. The coins she received as a reward, she put in her bank.
During their early years in Belt, Solomon was known as Hill because no one could spell or pronounce Hauskama. The two oldest children even went to school by the name Hill.

When they moved to the ranch to the ranch, the blacksmith shop went too, and Solomon made cattle brands for all the farmers besides doing the customaary work of the blacksmith. Lulu remembers pumping the bellows as her father worked.
Viana recalls walking one and a half miles to the Nelson School, bitter winters and all. Life was hard on the dry-land farm and money was scarce. Many Christmases they were lucky to receive a tablet and a couple of pencils in their Christmas stockings. An orange
or an apple was a luxury. But they had fun and there was music most of the time.

Anna Hauskama died May, 1930, and Solomon in August, 1948.
Their children were Tyyne (Tuna) Stinson, now deceased, who had three children: Sanfred, deceased, married to Ida Hendrickson, two chilren; Lyyli (Lulu) Koskela, five children; Elmas, deceased; Viana Erickson, two children; and Elmer and his wife, two children.
